CARE Program

Healthier children through evidence-based integrative health care.

Overview

vitamins In 2003, the first academic pediatric integrative medicine program in Canada was launched. Complementary and Alternative Research and Education (CARE) is an evaluative program whose mission is to generate and disseminate evidence about pediatric Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), to ensure safe and informed use. This program has three components—research, education and clinical assessment—that together have been designed to:

  • create a supportive and collaborative environment where conventional health care providers, CAM practitioners, and trainees can investigate and learn about CAM therapies and products from a rigorous evidence-based perspective
  • educate patients, families and health care providers about the safety and efficacy of CAM therapies and products through in-depth patient consultations
  • generate high quality evidence about CAM therapies and products

The program's outpatient clinic, multidisciplinary team of providers, educational and research resources as well as its collaborative relationships provide the foundation to ensure these goals are achievable. By combining clinical assessment, research and education, CARE promotes rapid knowledge discovery and dissemination. CARE's educational and research programs were launched in 2003 and the clinical assessment program began in 2006.
